Landewednack School’s Vision Statement for PE:
“The school has a holistic approach to education, encouraging development of the ‘whole child’. Children are treated as individuals to promote confidence, self-esteem and caring for others, encouraging children to develop and express their own ideas to become happy, confident and courteous”. Although we are a small school we aim to provide a wide range of sporting activities, both within the curriculum, through after school activities and outdoor learning opportunities, in order to ensure that our pupils understand the need for a healthy lifestyle and enjoy participating in sport. Through taking part in competitions and festivals with schools in the area, children mix with children from other schools and learn about sportsmanship.
At Landewednack School we believe PE & Sport plays an important role in making our vision statement a reality for every pupil, with the potential to change young people’s lives for the better.
We welcomed the Government’s announcement in June 2013 to provide additional funding to improve provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. We are committed to using this resource in developing high quality PE lessons, alongside greater opportunities for sporting competitions and clubs for all our young people.
Sport Premium Grant
What does the Sport Premium mean for my School?
‘Schools must spend the additional funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this’ (DFE June 2013).
At Landewednack School we have split up the funding by the three key areas for consideration; Physical Education, Competitive Sport and Healthy Active Lifestyles. We have decided to spend the Sport Premium Grant on the following:
Physical Education and Competitive Sport
- Supporting curriculum development by: buying into Real PE- a comprehensive curriculum with sequenced steps of physical development, assessment and CPD; a support package from the cluster secondary, which provides team teaching opportunities and CPD for staff. It also provides a wealth of sporting competitions with other schools in our area.
Our involvement with Mullion and Helston Secondary schools continues to be strong and we welcome the support that we get from Tom Studd as cluster sports lead. Our children regularly take part in sporting competitions with other feeder schools and we continue to be very successful. We have often won Cluster School of the year for our achievements in the cluster competitions. Our children have been given the opportunity to not only take part in local competitions but due to their success have gone on to represent the Mullion Cluster at the Peninsula competitions in Penryn. Due to our success in these Peninsula competitions we have won through to the Cornwall School games, the Olympics of primary school sport.

At Landewednack we are passionate about our PE and School Sport and we ensure that the children are not only active but learn life skills and values along the way. Our Real PE curriculum develops key abilities children need to be successful within PE, sport and in life; these 'cogs' are:

Our shine values that are important to our school are also woven through our PE curriculum:

S stands for Strive to be the best we can be,
H stands for Happiness-in learning and in life,
I stands for Imagine what we can do (high expectations, creativity),
N stands for Never give up (determination) and
E stands for Everyone together-child, school and community.
These values also work alongside the British values of Respect, Self-Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Justice and Tolerance. Our funding in the sports premium helps to ensure that the Real PE programme is taught to all our children. Our children are taught the fundamental skills of Agility, Balance and Co-ordination and from year 2 onwards, are also taught the more traditional sports.
- Teachers to attend Real PE, Real Gym and Balanceability training courses.
Through our membership of the Mullion Cluster and Youth Sports Trust we are constantly aware of the courses that are being run in the area to develop and enhance our PE. We endeavour to attend as many as possible.
- Delivery of after school clubs and opportunities.
At Landewednack we are lucky to have a supportive team of teachers, parents and coaches who regularly provide after school clubs including rugby, football, cricket, dance, ballet and bikeability.
In the summer months our year 5 and 6 children are given the opportunity to go sailing with the Helford River Sailing trust and surfingl at Poldhu beach. The surfing is being subsidised heavily using the sports premium with a small weekly contribution from parents. We live in a beautiful area and we think its very important to utilise the special environment our school is lucky to be located in and of course learn water safety.
- Playmaker training and development of Energy Clubs for play times.
- Support for the development of our outdoor learning areas and purchase of equipment.
Our sports premium enables us to keep our equipment up to date and in good supply. We have recently purchased balance bikes for our foundation and Key Stage 1 children. Two members of staff have recently been trained to help develop a Balanceability programme in school which will run alongside the Bikeability programme which our Key Stage 2 children take part in. Our Multi purpose track is situated on our sports field and is used for cycle and running clubs including the daily run! Inevitably the weather prevents us from accessing our field but the track ensures the children have more space to be active and enjoy a number of sports.
