Reading

At Landewednack, we love reading! Children enjoy reading and being read to throughout the day.

Our purpose built, wonderfully stocked library is the perfect place to enjoy a story or to do some quiet reading.

We warmly welcome friend of the school Sarah Drummond and her beautiful black Labrador, Asha, into our library. Sarah and Asha hear our children read and the children especially love reading their favourite listener - Asha!
Our reading curriculum includes a range of high quality texts that form part of our "Reading Spine" - texts that all children will read or study throughout their time at school:
Nursery - children are read to everyday and become familiar with texts from our Reading Spine.

Reception - children are read to everyday and have a daily RWI phonics lesson where they learn to read and spell.

KS1 - children have Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) time each day, where they can read books they read and are read to from a range of books and texts, including the books on our reading spine. Children also have a daily RWI phonics lesson where they learn to read and spell with increasing speed and fluency. Children "graduate" from phonics onto the RWI Comprehension programme and then begin to read texts from our reading spine in Whole Class Reading lessons.

KS2 - children continue to have DEAR time each day, where they are read to from a range of texts, read together, or read independently. Children also have a 30 minute Whole Class Reading lesson each day, where children develop the skills they need to become confident readers through studying high quality texts in depth.
Reading for pleasure
Reading opens a whole new world and helps us develop in so many ways. We want all our children to enjoy reading and choose to read frequently. We encourage this by teaching children to read quickly and competently, familiarising children with a range of high quality texts, and providing time each week in DEAR time for children to choose their own books to read.
