EYFS stands for Early Years Foundation Stage, which guides children's learning, development and care from birth to 5 years old.
At Landewednack School, nursery children (aged 2 - 4) learn in our Little Lizards nursery, a purpose built EYFS learning space. Reception children are part of our Puffins class, where they benefit from learning with our Year One children. This transition to a mixed class means children can learn from each other, look after each other, and have friends across the school. Both Little Lizards and Puffins class share a large outdoor area full of open ended activities and resources. This means that children become familiar with all adults in the EYFS team which allows for a smooth transition into school for our Nursery children.
Puffins and Little Lizards staff work closely together to ensure that all our EYFS children get an enriching, enjoyable EYFS experience; full of play, stories, exploring, forming relationships and developing their skills and confidence. We also ensure we lay strong foundations for academic skills that children will develop in Key Stage 1 and beyond, such as reading, writing and maths, to ensure that the transition between EYFS and Key Stage 1 is smooth and enjoyable for the children.
Children mostly learn through play based activities, with some short structured learning sessions or small group work throughout the day.
The areas of learning in EYFS are:
- Communication and Language
- Physical Development
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
- Literacy
- Mathematics
- Understanding the world
- Expressive art and design
Our curriculum planning for Nursery and Reception ensures that children enjoy a wide range of enriching experiences, and develop their skills in these areas of learning progressively throughout Nursery and Reception.
We plan to develop these skills through a range of play based activities and interactions to support all of our children to be happy, independent and confident throughout EYFS and their time at Landewednack School.
